Welcome Freshers!

Congratulations on becoming a member of Liverpool University Veterinary Faculty! The next three or five years will be worth every bit of effort you put in to get to this point, and will probably be the best years of your life!

This section of the site has been designed specially for you as freshers and contains all the information you require for the first week with regards to joining LUVS/LVS and taking part in the introductory events during the Vet Freshers Week.

Your freshers pack will give you details of where you need to be from when you come to Liverpool. This is the first chance you have to meet the LUVS/LVS committees and it is important that you attend the official faculty tours so that you can get to grips with the University and Faculty lay-out, and also to ask the committee of any queries you might have regarding the university, faculty or LUVS/LVS. The tours will be conducted by a member of the committee so you will have plenty of time to probe them for information!

Vet Freshers Week 2009

I am sure you are all hugely excited about Freshers week, and we all know that time flies when you are having fun, so to honour your entry into LUVS/LVS, we have organised a Vet Freshers week which starts on Sunday 27th September. From past experience and everyone I have spoken to, this is much much better than the University freshers week and once again it really integrates you into the rest of the Faculty as well as bonding you to your class-mates. The week is lots of fun, and the more energy you put into it the more you gain from the week.

Meet Your Buddy

Date: Sunday 27th September

Time: TBC

Location: Revolution, St Peters Square (click for map)

This event will allow you to meet your buddy who is a 3rd/4th year. The role of your buddy is to be a guardian for you in your first few weeks so that if you have any concerns you can turn to someone straight away for answers. You will receive your own Freshers T-shirt which you then wear to all the events so that we know who you are.

Games Night

Date: Monday 28th September

Time:TBC

Location: Stanley Theatre in the Students Guild

Some cheery party games to introduce you to your future class-mates. This takes place in the Stanley Theatre (as shown on the tour) Double Vision will be starting in the guild just after we finish for those that wish to say on.

Ceilidh Dance

Time: TBC

Location: Devonshire Hotel (click for map)

To try out those dancing shoes with some traditional Scottish dancing! The Devonshire hotel is on Edge Lane, which is about £1 each with 4 of you in a taxi. The Ceilidh is one of the best events of Freshers Week, so we hope you all enjoy it as much this year.

Buddy Meal

Date: Wedenesday 30th September

Location: Your Buddy's House!

Buddies cook their fresher a meal, to help them get to know each other. Details of the night are still to be confirmed.

Pub Crawl

Location: TBC

A suggested pub crawl route to show the freshers some of Liverpools nightlife ending in the Raz. At no point will specific drinks be suggested, freshers and other students are free to drink alcoholic or soft drink as they choose, each student will be responsible for their own alcohol consumption and subsequent behaviour. Route will be posted in the reading room.

Welcome Party

Date: Saturday 3rd October

Time: TBC

Location: Leahurst House

This is the pinnacle of your freshers week and a day you will not forget. You will want to wear old clothes during the day and bring your costume to change into in the evening for the party. You will be collected from your halls so you need not worry about anything except for remembering to bring your costume. You will be picked up from your halls and buses will take you back at around 1-2am.

In Summary

All in all, the week is excellent and our aim is to ensure that you have a superb time. It marks the start of your membership to LUVS/LVS and vet school, and gets you really stuck into university life.

Freshers Welcome Party Information

A Freshers welcome party is held every year by the Leahurst Veterinary Society (LVS) and Liverpool University Veterinary Society (LUVS) to welcome new students to the Faculty of Veterinary Science. The party consists of a series of events held during Freshers Week. These will help you get to know and bond with other veterinary students.

All the events are carefully planned according to the Faculty's code of conduct for social events. They will be carefully monitored and staff will be present at most of the events. It is up to you to decide how involved you want to be. There is no pressure to participate in all the events and you are free to withdraw at any point. This will not have any impact on your standing within the course, or with other students or staff.

It would spoil the surprise to let you know what is happening this year, but previous Welcome Parties have included meals out with other students, pub evenings, head shaving and outdoor games that may involve mud, water and tunnels. Food, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks will also be provided. All games played throughout the welcome party are approved in advance by the attending member of staff and last year's LUVS and LVS presidents to ensure that you are not put at risk of physical injury.

You are under no obligation to drink alcohol. If you choose to, please drink sensibly and safely. Please contact the organisers if you experience any disabilities or medical conditions (for instance allergies or phobias) so that we can help ensure that everyone can participate in the event. You can also speak to the organisers or staff present on the day if you don't want to take part in any events for any reason. The organisers and staff will handle personal information with sensitivity and in confidence.

Membership

We hate to be yet another person asking for money but LUVS membership is worth every penny and is lifelong! The membership fee for this year is yet to be confirmed (well no one has told me yet at least). The memership includes subs to AVS (the Association of Veterinary Students) and IVSA (International Veterinary Student Association), as well as allowing free entry to all your fresher events to join in the fun. Furthermore, it allows LUVS to carry on and be the prestigious and successful society it still is to this day.

LUVS has supported vet students from all backgrounds whether they are straight from school or graduates, overseas or British students and is there to help you to gain as little or as much as you would like from vet school life.

To join, please send your cheque payable to L.U.V.S with your name, address and telephone number on the back and two passport photos with it, to the following address:

Faculty of Veterinary Science
Leahurst
Veterinary Teaching Hospital
Chester High Road
Neston

If you have any queries from now until the start of term please do not hesitate to contact me by the e-mail or phone number shown at the top of this letter. Unfortunatley you wont be able to become a member of our website until you have a Liverpool University email address which you should get during your first week here, at which time we will let you know how to register.

I shall reiterate again, CONGRATULATIONS! You have made it to vet school. Enjoy the rest of your summer and both the committee and I look forward to seeing you in September.

Best Wishes

Lorien Waterer
